"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined." - Henry David Thoreau

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! As juniors, you will be introduced to influential American Literature by Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson, Ellison, and Hemingway, among others. We will highlight their distinctly American styles and themes. We will study them within the context of American literary movements, including Transcendentalism, Realism, and Modernism.

We begin with the nonfiction of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. This unit on Transcedentalism will take us outside the four walls of the classroom. If Thoreau was right and education often "makes a straight cut ditch of a free meandering brook," then we will need to do our fair share of meandering - both intellectually and physically. We will practice the artistic and scientific discipline of observation. Our first destination: the Brookline Reservoir. Our last: Walden Pond.
